One of nature's marvels, the Charyn Canyon is over 56 miles (90 km) in length with beauty and majesty reminiscent of the US Grand Canyon. Located only 2 hours from Almaty, it is easy to visit.
Experience stunning unspoiled natural beauty and tranquility here. Even the wild animals do not fear humans.
The Dzungarian Gate, the most popular area in this region for visitors, is a mountain pass between Birliktau and Militau, and formerly part of the great Silk Road trading route.
Have you ever heard sand dunes sing?
This truly amazing site, sight and sound occurs when winds blow over the ridges of the sand dunes when they are dry, causing the sand to shift and make a unique type of sound. They are located north-east of Almaty, in the country's largeset national park, Altyn-Emel.
These amazingly beautiful lakes provide the travelers with a serene calm and a feeling of being a part of nature. These places are rightly called "The pearl of Kazakhstan": from a bird's-eye view the lakes look like precious beads strung on the mountain ridge of the Trans-Ili Alatau like on a thread.
One day is hardly enough to visit the Kolsay Lakes and the unique Kaindy Lake with ancient spruces sprouting from the water. That’s why it’s better to dedicate the whole weekend to the acquaintance with the nature of Kazakhstan, its grandeur and legends. The fresh clean air of a small village of Sata will make for a deep sleep and silence, which we sorely lack in big cities. This trip to the lakes is a powerful reboot and one of the best ways to find inspiration.
Three Kolsay lakes are located at an altitude of 1800, 2250 and 2700 meters above sea level and form a unique natural region. The middle lake lies in safe hands of the mountains like a precious bowl of turquoise crystal. The landscapes, framing the lake, look like the the sceneries from the paintings of great artists and stand still in reverence to the greatness of nature. Here, in the shadow of age-old trees and spruces, you will learn the history of the region and its cultural background. Legends, fairy tales, facts and the lives of heroes are intertwined in the mottled carpet of the Kazakh pattern.
The water of the Kolsay lakes is so clean that trouts, which choose only crystal-clear ponds for living, create here a real "firework". This is truly a fascinating show, when at sunset hundreds and thousands of small fishes jump out of the water. Their silver scales shines, and all together they form a sparkling stream, beaming in the rays of the setting sun.
Let's add one more famous lake to our 'pearl story'. The Sary-Bulak pass is a perfect place to admire the beauty of the famous blue Issyk-Kul lake. The legendary lake, the hero of many legends and poems, it silently keeps the memory of centuries and the history of these blessed places. The lake doesn’t freeze durng winter, and even today it's still considered to be sacred among the Kyrgyz peoples. After visiting this place for the first time, it is impossible to forget the enormous dimensions of the nature's art, the enchanting panorama of the mountains, and the peaceful lapping of crystal-clean waves.
The word "Kaindy" can be translated from the Kazakh language as "rife with birches". It can be historically explained: a terrible earthquake that struck the valley in 1911 led to a rockfall that blocked the river. Later, a mudflow destroyed the rest of lumps of rock and sank the forest, growing in the valley. The force of nature became a creator of the picturesque landscape: on the territory of 400 meters, graceful fir-trees are growing there, in turquoise glittering water. We will have a walk along the lake and make souvenir photos that will resemble the shoots from fantastic movies.
On all sides, the turquoise waters of Kaindy are surrounded by rocky slopes and steep сliffs. A little bit above, there is a mountain dead-end, and it’s possible to get to the water by car only from one side. From the crest of the rock one can admire the breathtaking views of the ravine of Sata, the Chilik River valley, and the ravine of Kaindy. The forests around the lake have preserved their fertility: here you can collect mushrooms and medicinal herbs, enjoy fresh strawberries in July and August and mountain raspberries during the last month of summer.
Dry tunks of fir-trees rise above the water surface like the masts of flooded ships. The deep water of the lake, more than 30 meters, kinglike rests among the mountain ridges. Every year, more and more people come to Kaindy to admire the nature and its magnitude, to think about life and to find inspiration.
