Have you ever heard sand dunes sing?
This truly amazing site, sight and sound occurs when winds blow over the ridges of the sand dunes when they are dry, causing the sand to shift and make a unique type of sound. They are located north-east of Almaty, in the country's largeset national park, Altyn-Emel.
You will have an exciting jeep trip to the unique Altyn-Emel Nature Park. The trip will leave unforgettable experience.
Route: Almaty Region (Kazakhstan)
Season: January to December
Day 1. Departure from Almaty – visit to the National Park and the Singing Barkhan
At 9 AM, departure from Almaty to the National Park is planned; on the way to the Singing Barkhan you will have picnic at the spring.
On the plain between the Small and the Great Kalkan there is the natural wonder – the Singing Barkhan. It is a sand fill, which with gusts of wind, emits sounds of flowing organ music. If there is a sand storm, you can hear the drumbeat sounds. The nature sanctuary consists of two barkhans with a maximum height of 650 meters. The barkhan appeared due to the wind rose, which was formed at the junction of the mountains. For several centuries it remains in this place, and either produces haze under a light wind, or makes threatening sounds under a strong one. Scientists tried to find out why it was "singing", but could not provide any scientific justification. Today the Barkhan is one of the seven wonders of Kazakhstan.
Dinner at the camp.
Day 2. The Harsh Katutau and the White Aktau
After breakfast, transfer to the harsh mountains of Katutau. There is no literal translation from the Mongolian, it is customary to translate them as the "harsh mountains". The name is given due to the volcanic origin of the mountains.
After the lunch picnic, transfer to Aktau.
Picturesque views of unique landscapes await you there. A sea used to be here, but then it disappeared leaving behind a view of the intricate gorge and majestic canyons. The beauty of nature is amazing: the colors of rocks change creating bizarre pictures.
Today it is difficult to imagine, but once crocodiles and giant rhinoceroses used to live here, and their remains are found in abundance during geological excavations. The area used to be covered with xerophilic forests; trunk parts and leaf prints can be found in a paleontological deposit.
In the evening we camp down at the foot of the mountain. Overnight stay in tents.
Day 3. The Aktau Mountains and back to Almaty
Breakfast and a walk in the gorge. Lunch and departure back to Almaty, arrival at about 8 PM.
