The Dzungarian Alatau (Almaty Region, Kazakhstan)

This botanical tour to places where rare plant species have been preserved is perfect for nature lovers who would like to see wild Malus sieversii apple trees.

Route: The Dzungarian Alatau (Almaty Region, Kazakhstan)

Season: June to September


Day 1. Almaty—Taldykorgan—Sarkand—Osinovy Cordon.

Early start time. Time of arrival in Taldykorgan: about 11 a.m. Tourists visit the Local History Museum. They move to Sarkand, a small town founded by Cossacks from Siberia, in the afternoon. It presently has a brewery and a cheese factory.

Moving to the cordon for an overnight stay.

Day 2. A walking tour

Tourists can visit forest reserves with rare and endangered plant species. In Soldatskoye and Pikhtovoye, you can see Malus sieversii, a species dating back to the Cretaceous. The area was once part of the Silk Road, so apple seeds soon spread east and west. The species was named after Sievers, a botanist from Saint Petersburg who was the first to describe it.

 Day 3. Moving to Kokzhota Cordon. 

The tourists start for Kokzhota Cordon, which is 46 km away, right after breakfast. We will make several stops on our way to watch the wildlife and enjoy breathtaking views of the Alatau.

Day 4. Moving to Lepsinsk to Chornaya Rechka Cordon. 

We go to see a tree nursery in Lepsinsk after breakfast. You will find out how to grow and tend trees. After lunch and a rest, we head for areas where pristine nature has been preserved. Overnight stay at Chornaya Rechka Cordon. 

Day 5. Chornaya Rechka Cordon

The tourists have the whole day to rest and explore the local life. 

Day 6. Back to Almaty.

Early rise and departure. We will stop for a lunch on our way. Time of arrival: about 8 p.m.
